Implants are used extensively for people who have no teeth at all. In fact, this can often be where the advantages of dental implants "shine" the most. Gone are the days of accepting ill-fitting dentures and a less than ideal smile.
Dental implants can be used to secure loose dentures with a connection that can be removed by the patient. There are also treatment options available that are fixed, just like real teeth, to the mouth and can only be removed by your dentist for cleaning and maintenance.
They are also used extensively for people who have no teeth at all. In fact this can often be where their advantages "shine" the most. With the current trend of people being more active and healthy and living longer, gone are the days where people just accept that they will have regular ill-fitting dentures for the rest of their life. Instead they are now looking for strong, secure and beautiful ways to restore their smile. In these cases dental implants can be used to secure loose dentures with a connection that can be removed by the patient. There are also treatment options that are fixed, just like real teeth and can only be removed by your dentist for cleaning and maintenance.
In the not too distant past a missing tooth (or two) was most often replaced by a "bridge", which used the teeth on either side of the space for support. In the making of the bridge, the teeth on either side of the gap had to be cut down to receive the bridge and this was the major disadvantage to this treatment option. By using a dental implant to replace a missing tooth instead of a bridge we can now avoid making a one tooth problem into a three tooth problem.
Dr. Legault is one of the very few dentists in Northern BC to complete extensive training at the Misch International Implant Institute in the US. As a result he received his Fellowship with the Misch International Implant Institute and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. The bulk of this training included over 200 hours of hands-on and didactic training over a course of several years. Dr. Legault updates his training on a regular basis so he can keep current on the new techniques and tooling used in this fascinating area of dentistry.
Training at this level is well outside what is required for a general dentist to graduate from dental school. If you are contemplating dental implants, be sure to ask the clinician about their level of training.
